Dosage:

The dosage of the drug is determined by the attending physician for each patient. But the usual dosage of the drug is as follows:

Acute diarrhea:

Adults and children 13 years and older: 4 mg initially and then 2 mg after each watery stool. The maximum daily dose is 16 mg.

Children 6 to 12 years:

First day:

6 to 8 years (weighing 20 to 30 kg): 2 mg twice a day (4 mg total daily dose)

8 to 12 years (weighing more than 30 kg): 2 mg three times a day (6 mg total daily dose)

Next day:

After the first day of treatment, it is recommended that subsequent doses of loperamide be administered at 1 mg per 10 kg of body weight only after each stool. The total daily dose should not exceed the doses recommended for the first day.

Note: Clinical improvement is usually seen within 48 hours. If no improvement occurs within 48 hours, consult a doctor.

Chronic diarrhea:

Adults:

The recommended initial dose is 4 mg followed by 2 mg after each bowel movement until diarrhea is controlled. The dose of loperamide should then be reduced until the optimal daily dose is determined. This may be given as a single dose or in divided doses. The average daily maintenance dose in clinical trials was 4 to 8 mg. The maximum daily dose is 16 mg. If clinical improvement is not seen after treatment with 16 mg daily for at least 10 days, consult a doctor.
